Thank's for Todays Tips

Let's take a poll, readers. Does it bother you more when writers omit apostrophes, like this:

or add them where they shouldn't be, like this:

?

I saw both of these apostrophe catastrophes at the Metro Cafe on the same day. It was a bad day for punctuation.

I'd say it bothers me more when they add them where they don't belong. It's as if they went to the extra trouble to punctuate badly.

I think I agree with Charles. Similarly, I don't mind that much when people with Boston accents omit their R's (yes, that apostrophe is fine...), but it annoys me when they add an extra R to the end of words. "Pahk the cah" = OK. "I'm going to Aruber" = not OK.

yeah, extra ones definitely bother me more than ones that are left out.

Extra apostrophes are the worst...

And explain: why is it okay to have an apostrophe in cases like “R’s” or “The 1980’s”?

The AP Guide says to use apostrophes to make plurals of a single letter (as in "Mind your p's and q's") but not for plurals of numerals or multiple-letter combinations. (from p. 325 of the 2007 edition)

Extra apostrophes strike me as worse. Omitting one could be merely careless; adding one is a mark of ignorance (pun intended).

extra = worst!

In my case the added apostrophe in the cup would have been enough to turn me off from the tea/coffee in that cup. And I love tea/coffee.

The added unnecessary apostrophe bother's me more for some reason.

GAH it hurt my finger's to type this comment.

Sorry, but the title of this article should be "Thanks for today's tips".

I've already been bollocked countless times for the fact that 'today' has a possessive, even though it isn't a person.

Rob, the punctuation errors in the title are intentional. That's the whole point.

Adding apostrophe's drive's me crazy. By the way, in case a guy like Rob read's this, all of the apostrophe's I'm adding are intentional. I just posted a blog about this cause I just HATE it.
